Etiology of Thickened Pituitary Stalks

چکیده
Visit our website at: http://pituitary.mgh.harvard.edu On magnetic resonance imaging, some patients with clinical neuroendocrine disorders have thickened pituitary stalks, the anatomical structure which connects the hypothalamus to the pituitary (Figure 1). These disorders can be classified as neoplastic, inflammatory, or infectious in origin, although there are rare forms of congenital malformations that may give a similar clinical and imaging presentation. Here we will briefly review the diagnostic aspects of the common causes of suprasellar masses that cause thickened pituitary stalks (Table 1). We will not discuss congenital pituitary stalk anomalies, infections involving the pituitary stalk, rare stalk tumors such as pituicytomas, or pituitary adenomas which may extend superiorly.

Etiologies of a thickened stalk include inflammatory, neoplastic, and idiopathic origins, and the underlying diagnosis may remain occult. We report a patient with a thickened pituitary stalk (TPS) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) whose diagnosis remained obscure until a skin lesion appeared. The patient presented with PTC, status postthyroidectomy, and I(131) therapy. PTC molecular testing...

PURPOSE The diagnosis of pituitary stalk lesion has been based on clinical feature, radiologic assessment for its critical location and role. This study aimed to investigate clinical symptoms, endocrine disturbance, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of pituitary stalk lesions in children and adolescents and to evaluate differences between neoplastic lesions with the others. METHODS We...
متن کاملCT of the normal pituitary stalk.
A prospective study assessed the size and frequency of visualization of the normal pituitary stalk on high-resolution computed tomography (CT). The normal pituitary stalk can be seen on the vast majority of high-resolution scans obtained with thin sections and intravenous contrast material. The upper size limit of the normal pituitary stalk is 4 mm at the level of the dorsum sellae and 4.5 mm a...
متن کاملLipedematous Scalp: A Case Report
Lipedematous scalp (LS) and Lipedematous Alopecia (LA) are uncommon disorders of unknown etiology, pathogenesis and treatment. They are characterized by thickening of the subcutaneous layer of the scalp and a boggy scalp on palpation. Also, hair loss or shortening of hair is seen in LA. In this report, we describe LS in a 42-year-old woman presented with a diffuse thickened and spongy scalp. To...
متن کاملThickened Pituitary Stalk Associated with a Mass in the Sphenoidal Sinus: An Alarm to Suspect Hypophysitis by Immunoglobulin G4?
Introduction Hypophysitis is a chronic inflammation of the pituitary gland of complex and still incompletely defined pathogenesis. It belongs to the group of non-hormone-secreting sellar masses, sharing with them comparable clinical presentation and radiographic appearance. Objectives Describe the case of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related hypophysitis presenting as a mass in the sphenoid sinus. ...
